BUYING GUIDE / Configuration planning

Memory capacity is only the starting point.

Specify the CPU, population and growth path—not just the total gigabytes.

ASTER RACKIT editorial · Source review 2026-09-09

01 / PROJECT REVIEW

Define the workload and the expansion target

A useful memory request separates the capacity needed at delivery from the capacity planned later. Record the application, the expected working set, the number of virtual machines and the expansion budget. These inputs help an engineer compare layouts without treating the largest supported number as the best choice for every project.

Write the installed CPU count into the same line as the memory requirement. Ask for the proposed slot map, module quantities, capacities and complete option part numbers. An advertised platform maximum does not describe the population installed in the offered machine.

02 / PROJECT REVIEW

Compare layouts, not isolated speed labels

The SR650 V4 guide distinguishes RDIMM and MRDIMM population rules and the reduced slot count of its Neptune Core compute-complex variant. That is a reason to request the exact machine type and memory technology before accepting a generic “32-slot V4” description.

Ask the supplier to show the expected operating speed of the complete CPU-and-DIMM population. Record the module label speed separately. A proposed substitution needs a fresh population check, even when its capacity is unchanged. Do not assume that a different memory technology is a drop-in upgrade.

03 / PROJECT REVIEW

Make acceptance measurable

Request a firmware inventory, the installed module list, the populated slot map and the agreed memory-test report for the offered configuration. Specify whether serial-level photographs are required and who checks the evidence before shipment.

For a phased rollout, keep the first shipment’s module identities and BIOS settings with the project BOM. When ordering the next batch, ask for a documented equivalence review rather than an assurance based on the same headline capacity. If a required field is unknown, leave it as an open engineering question.

Original procurement guidance. Engineering considerations are not a manufacturer-validated configuration or a performance guarantee.
