BUYING GUIDE / GPU & AI planning

Buy the accelerator and its host as one system.

Qualification, thermals and infrastructure belong beside GPU memory in the RFQ.

01 / PROJECT REVIEW

Identify the exact accelerator edition

Write the complete accelerator name, edition and PN into the request. NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition has distinct server cooling arrangements; do not substitute a workstation edition from a shortened title. The NVIDIA L4 belongs to a different physical and power class, so a “GPU-capable” platform label is not a compatibility decision.

Ask for the intended application, software stack and accelerator count. Record whether interconnect, virtualization or software licensing is a requirement. These are selection inputs; this guide does not promise application performance for an untested bundle.

02 / PROJECT REVIEW

Review the host qualification with its footnotes

Obtain the OEM qualification entry for the exact server and GPU. Review card count, riser, cable kit, CPU restrictions, airflow and ambient conditions. The Supermicro SYS-222C-TN qualification table carries CPU-power and ambient-temperature restrictions for particular GPUs; copying only the GPU name discards important conditions.

Request a complete platform BOM and a diagram of accelerator and network placement. Ask the integrator to identify any shared constraints with storage or other expansion cards. A free mechanical slot does not by itself establish an approved accelerator configuration.

03 / PROJECT REVIEW

Prepare the site and acceptance plan

Ask for the completed platform power estimate, redundancy mode, input connections and cooling requirements. Where liquid cooling is proposed, request the facility interface and commissioning responsibilities before the shipment is booked. Do not use the GPU’s standalone board power as the complete server power requirement.

Agree an acceptance test around the intended software stack. Keep the driver, firmware and test workload version with the result. Identify any purchased software entitlement separately: NVIDIA’s L4 page, for example, states that AI Enterprise is an additional licence.

Original procurement guidance. Engineering considerations are not a manufacturer-validated configuration or a performance guarantee.
