Installation planning

Match the processor to the complete system.

Exact platform and BIOS
Provide the server generation, motherboard revision, installed BIOS and current processor. A matching socket alone does not establish processor support.
Cooling and power
Confirm the permitted processor power range, heatsink or liquid-cooling assembly, fan configuration and chassis restrictions for the exact system.
Single- and multi-socket configurations
Check the supported processor count and matching rules. A single-socket variant must not be substituted into a dual-socket configuration without explicit platform support.
Memory and expansion
Processor capability does not guarantee the server implements every memory speed, memory capacity or PCIe lane. Check the system population and riser requirements.

Compare specifications

Look beyond the core count.

01

Clock and workload

Base clock, maximum turbo and all-core frequencies describe different operating conditions. Compare the same measurement, and account for cooling, firmware and the application.

02

Power and cooling

Default processor power, thermal design power and configurable limits are not interchangeable. Select cooling from the exact server requirements, not from the CPU name alone.

03

Memory and I/O

Check the memory generation, channels, supported module types and PCIe capabilities. The motherboard and installed options determine which capabilities are available.

Purchasing questions

Confirm identity before substitution.

Is a CPU model the same as an OEM option PN?

No. The processor model identifies the CPU. An OEM option or service PN identifies that system vendor's part or kit, which may include a carrier, heatsink or other installation items. Keep these identities separate.

Do matching sockets prove compatibility?

No. Server generation, BIOS support, processor stepping, power limits, cooling and supported population must also be checked.

Are listed models currently in stock?

A listing is not a stock confirmation. Request the available quantity, condition, exact markings and delivery terms for the offered units.

Can tray and boxed codes be interchanged?

Confirm the complete ordering code and package contents. Packaging, included items and warranty terms may differ; the quotation must identify the supplied product.
